Omogunwa, Kunlere resign from Ondo cabinet
Sunday Aborisade, Punch Newspaper, Akure. Date & Time Filed on MyOndoState.Com: 2010-08-26 20:31:11
Ondo State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Yele Omogunwa, and the Special Adviser to the governor on Political Matters, Mr. Boluwaji Kunlere, have resigned their appointments to enable them to contest for the Ondo South Senatorial District seat next year.
Confirming the development to journalists in Akure on Thursday at a news conference, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr.Ranti Akerele, said both officials tendered their resignation letters at the weekly state executive council meeting on Wednesday.
Akerele said the two former aides of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who are both contesting for the same senatorial seat, resigned in order to actualise their political ambitions.
He said, “The two gentlemen presented their letters to the executive council meeting and they were accepted. They will be missed in the council for their contributions and performances.
“The resignation of these gentlemen is a further attestation to the commitment of this government to doing things right and democratically.
“We do not want to shortchange the people and that is why they have opted to face their political goals, leaving the running of their former beats to those who will not be overtly distracted.”
Our correspondent had reported on Monday that no fewer than five political office-holders currently serving in the administration of Mimiko may tender their letters of resignation this week in compliance with the order of the Labour Party.
The LP state secretariat had last week directed all the political office-holders seeking elective positions next year to quit before the end of the week.
The directive also asked those holding party positions and at the same time serving as political appointees to resign.
Some of them allegedly petitioned the National Secretariat of the party, but their request was not granted as they were asked to comply with the order of the state chapter of the party.
Those affected by the party’s directive to resign positions are Messrs Banji Akinkuowo, Akin Akinbobola, Remi Olatubora, Wole Akinjo, Yetunde Adeyanju, and Mrs. Iyabo Akinbobola.
Others are Mr. Clement Faboyede, Otunba Mallon Omogbemi, Messrs Kunle Asaolu, Dara Akinbo, Yinka Akinyosoye, Bobby Omotoso, Lola Ereoyenikan and Mrs. Stella Oluwatuyi.
Those who were serving as commissioners and Special Advisers and were asked to resign their appointments are Messrs Yele Omogunwa and Boluwaji Kunlere.
The two of them have obtained forms to contest the Ondo South Senatorial District election on the platform of the L P.
Others are Dare Aliu, Olumide George and Ifedayo Abegunde. They are interested in the Houses of Representatives and Assembly seats in their various constituencies.
The Chairman of the party, Dr. Olaiya Oni, told journalists that the appointees had August 31 deadline to resign as thanere would not be waiver or extension.
